Rovio, developer of the hit “Angry Birds” series, has revealed via Twitter that its latest title – “Angry Birds Rio” – has hit the 10 million download mark in just 10 days.
That number blends both free and paid downloads across all of the game’s platforms. It was helped greatly by an Amazon.com promotion that made the game freely available to anyone with an Android phone. Those on Apple’s iOS platform were forced to pay 99 cents or $2.99 to play.
The game is an extension of the original gameplay, but is also a promotional vehicle for Fox’s upcoming film “Rio”.
“Angry Birds” continues to be the shining success story of the app marketplace. The original game has had more than 100 million downloads and Rovio has been making the rounds at studios to discuss crossover possibilities ranging from TV shows to movies to comic books.
Company officials have also said they are contemplating an IPO for the company in two to three years.
