Dan Fogelman: Scribe’s career gets ‘Crazy’

Comedy Impact Report 2011: Bigscreen Bigshots

After years of success as the scribe for animated features such as “Cars,” “Bolt” and “Tangled,” Dan Fogelman has catapulted to real-world superstardom with this year’s star-studded comedy “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” Fogelman’s enchanted year includes both “Tangled” and “Crazy”; a seven-figure deal to write a Tom Cruise vehicle for Warner Bros.; a sitcom pilot project for ABC; a mother-son comedy with Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand; and Al Pacino signing on to star in his directorial debut. “Crazy” grossed $144 million worldwide and is sparking some awards talk.

“This year has been pretty trippy,” Fogelman says. “It’s been a really nice ride getting to work on all these projects with all these people I’ve been fanatical about for so long.” For Fogelman, this year means he holds the power to have his other stories made, like the alien-themed TV pilot he wrote four years ago. “It was one of these little strange projects I got super attached to, and I got really bummed out that I didn’t get to make a pilot about it, and I just kept holding out. … And now I’m about to shoot the pilot for it.”
