Org plans a tech confab

Conference set to take place in 2012 in Switzerland

The Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers has skedded a new event, the Global Conference on Emerging Media Technologies, to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, in May 2012.

Conference will look at tech expected to emerge into the market in three to 10 years, covering all sorts of moving images: theatrical, broadcast, mobile and broadband. David Wood, head of new technology at European Broadcast Union headquarters in Geneva, will chair the conference.

“We hope to have a balance of technologists, researchers, maybe a little bit of business aspect, but it’s really designed for the executive-level technologist,” SMPTE exec director Barbara Lange told Variety.

Hans Hoffman, engineering veep for SMPTE, added, “Decisionmakers have a real interest in understanding the strategic impact technological developments will have on their companies. They will get that information.”

SMPTE announced several other initiatives and publications. Org has compiled more than 33 papers on 3D stretching back to the 1920s into a 400 -age tome, “3D Cinema,” that will be available in June.

SMPTE is also launching in June a professional report series. The first will be on 3D. Lange said the series will focus on “the significance of standards and the importance of standards in connecting the dots from research to business.”

Org is also creating an expanded online digital library to help users and members find technical information.

Announcements came at the kickoff of the SMPTE Digital Cinema Summit in Las Vegas.
