Warner Bros. signs for ‘Red Lights’

De Niro and Weaver thriller bows early 2012

MADRID — Warner Bros. Pictures has taken Spanish theatrical and DVD rights to Robert De Niro and Sigourney Weaver starrer “Red Lights,” a psychological thriller helmed by Spaniard Rodrigo Cortes.

Cortes’ followup to Ryan Reynolds vehicle “Buried,” “Lights” starts lensing Feb. 14, located in Toronto and Barcelona.

Barcelona-based shingle Versus Ent. produces in association with Cindy Cowan Ent., Antena 3 Films and Televisio de Catalunya. Film producers are Versus’ Adrian Guerra and Cortes.

Pic also toplines Cillian Murphy (“The Dark Knight”), Elizabeth Olsen (“Martha Marcy May Marlene”), Toby Jones (“The Rite”), Joely Richardson (“Nip/Tuck”) and Leonardo Sbaraglia (“The Widows of Thursdays”).

From an original screenplay by Cortes, “Lights” turns on a psychologist, played by Weaver, and her assistant (Murphy), whose study of paranormal activity leads them to investigate a world-renowned psychic (De Niro).

Warners released “Buried” in Spain last year, nabbing a healthy B.O. of Euro2.4 million ($3.3 million).

The plan is to release “Red Lights” in Spain early 2012, Guerra said.
