‘Umbrellas’ closes in West End

Tuner to shutter at the Gielgud theater on May 21

Producers have pulled the plug on Kneehigh’s adaptation of the movie tuner “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” 10 days after its West End opening.

The production, which opened to mostly lukewarm reviews, will shutter at the Gielgud Theater on May 21; its original booking period ran until Oct. 1.

Producer Daniel Sparrow said: “Together with my co-producing team, we are immensely proud to have brought our production of ‘The Umbrellas of Cherbourg’ to the West End following its run in Leicester earlier this year. However, despite consistently positive audience responses, for economic reasons we are having to close earlier than anticipated.”

Discussions about a U.K. tour and international productions of “Umbrellas” remain ongoing.
