‘Pirates’ sets course for China

Disney plans day-and-date launch for 'Tides'

The fourth installment of Walt Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise will be released in China on May 20, day-and-date with most of the rest of the world.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” will play in all formats, including 3D and Imax 3D.

The first installment, “The Curse of the Black Pearl,” chalked up $3.4 million at the China box office, but “Dead Man’s Chest” was banned, ostensibly because of cannibal scenes.

However, it was back to business as usual with the third pic, “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” which took around $18 million.

“On Stranger Tides” will unspool at the Cannes Film Festival on May 11, playing out of competition.
