TOKYO — Nippon Television Network is prepping a 3D live-action version of “Kaibutsu-kun,” a hit TV series based on Fujiko Fujio A’s fantasy action comic.
The Yen 2 billion ($24 million) budget for the pic is as big as it gets for the Japanese biz.
“Kaibutsu-kun” will star Satoshi Ono of the boy band Arashi in the title role of a prince from Kaibutsu Land (“Monster Land”) who journeys to the human world to prepare himself for the kingship.
Helmer Yoshihiro Nakamura is best known abroad for his 2009 end-of-the-world drama “Fish Story” that screened widely at foreign fests.
Other cast members include Korean martial artist Choi Hong Man as well as local thesps Norito Yashima, Ryuhei Ueshima, Masahiro Matsuoka and Umika Kawashima.
Filming started on Jan. 6, with location shoots in Asia planned. The pic is skedded to wrap in October and bow in theaters at the end of the year.
