Production house picks up 'Island,' 'Ave'
Paris-based shingle Le Pacte has picked up two Bulgarian pics playing at Cannes: Directors’ Fortnight player “The Island” and Critics’ Week’s screener “Ave.”Le Pacte will distribute in France and sell worldwide Kamen Kalev’s (“Eastern Plays”) “The Island” and Konstantin Bojanov’s “Ave.” “The Island” stars Laetitia Casta and Thure Lindhardt as a couple whose romantic trip to a Bulgarian island turns out to be far from idyllic. Pic is produced by Kalev’s shingle Waterfront Film and co-produced by Swedish outfit the Chimney Pot. “Ave” is a dramedy toplining thesps Angela Nedyalkova and Ovanes Torosyan. Pic turns on a hitchhiker and runaway teenage girl who fall in love. Jean Labadie’s Le Pacte has also nabbed Katia Lewkowizc’s Critics’ Week screener “Bachelor Days Are Over.” The French laffer stars a string of well-known thesps, notably singer-turned-actor Benjamin Biolay, Emmanuelle Devos and Nicole Garcia. At Cannes, Le Pacte’s sales team, headed by Camille Neel, is shopping Mathieu Amalric’s “The Screen Illusion,” a contempo adaptation of Pierre Corneille’s classic play. The Denis Podalydes-starrer is produced by Les Films des Pierre and Maia Cinema. Le Pacte’s Cannes roaster also includes “The Land of Oblivion,” a drama from Michale Boganim (“Odessa Odessa”) on the Chernobyl tragedy, starring Olga Kurylenko; and John Shank’s “Last Winter,” a drama starring Vincent Rottiers and Anais Demoustier. “Oblivion” is produced by Les Films du Poisson. “Last Winter’ is produced by up-and-coming production shingle Silex Films, launched a year ago. Le Pacte will release both “Oblivion” and “Last Winter” in Gaul.
