It will relaunch as three channels in October

Tokyo — Wowow, Japan’s leading pay entertainment channel, will relaunch as three Wowow-branded HD channels, company officials announced on Wednesday.

Wowow Prime, Wowow Live and Wowow Cinema will air in October.

Wowow Prime will be the flagship channel, offering family entertainment, including dubbed versions of foreign pics and dramas, as well as Wowow’s popular “Drama W” series and other in-house content.

Wowow Live will broadcast live music, sports, plays and other events, with highlights including all four Grand Slam tennis tourneys and Spanish league soccer. Wowow Cinema will screen 800 films a year, including pics not yet released theatrically in Japan.

Its monthly fee of $29.28 will not go up, despite the increase in content.

Wowow was Japan’s first commercial pay TV channel, launching in 1991. At of the end of March, Wowow had 2,511,701 subs.
