‘Gallants’ tops Hong Kong fest

Tsui's 'Dee' nabs six awards including director

The spoils at the 30th Hong Kong Film awards on Sunday were split fairly evenly between two local favorites as low-budget chopsocky “Gallants” was named best film, while Tsui Hark nabbed helmer honors for fantasy actioner “Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame.”

“Gallants,” a retro-styled kung-fu comedy, has been the surprise hit of the year. It also took supporting thesp kudos for Teddy Robin and Susan Shaw, as well as original film score. It won the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Award earlier this year.

“Detective Dee” nabbed six awards including actress for Carina Lau, costume, art direction, visual effects and sound.

Thesp kudos went to Nicholas Tse, who played a reluctant informant in “The Stool Pigeon.”

“Ip Man 2” drew the nods for action choreography and editing.

“Confessions” from Japan won best Asian film despite strong candidates from Mainland China in the shape of Feng Xiaogang’s “Aftershock” and Zhang Yimou’s “Under the Hawthorn Tree.”
