'Nico 2' and 'Rat King' each nab $1 million

LONDON — Finland’s national film foundation has announced production support worth nearly €3.7 million ($5 million).

Features win the lion’s share of grants although full-length animation “Niko 2,” about a flying reindeer, gets just over $1 million.

The features attracting support are: helmer Mari Rantasila’s family musical comedy,”Ricky Rapper and the Cool Wendy,” due to premiere February 2012, which received $890,000; Petri Kotwica’s “Rat King,” which nabbed just over $1 million; Aleksi Makela’s social drama “Life for Sale,” due to premiere in the fall, which got $890,000; Jukka Pekka Siili’s “Periphery,” a period drama about two warring brothers, due to premiere next February, which received just over $1 million; and Karzan Kader’s Swedish co-production “Bekas,” about two homeless Kurdish kids who dream of going to America, which was given $178,000.
