Series is based on Edith Nesbit's children's book

LONDON — Indian toon house DQ Ent. has signed a distribution deal with German pubcaster ZDF for their upcoming 3D stereoscopic toon skein “5 & It.”

The series is based on British author Edith Nesbit’s popular 1902 classic “Five Children and It,” where the children unearth and befriend a Psammead — an irritable sand fairy. Eponymous live-action television versions were produced in 1951 and 1991, and a feature film in 2004.

“5 & It” is being produced on a budget of E9.2 million ($13.5 million) and is aimed at kids aged six to 10.

ZDF will hold the distribution rights for 64 countries, including all of Europe except French-language territories, U.K. and Ireland, as well as South Africa and Latin America.

ZDF has had similar deals with DQE for the “Peter Pan,” “The Jungle Book” and “Lassie” skeins.
