Disney, Lovefilm cozy up

Mouse House content available to stream on demand

Disney U.K. and Ireland has pacted with Lovefilm, Europe’s Netflix equivalent, for video on demand — Disney’s first major partner outside of the pay TV window.

Lovefilm subscribers will be able to rent and stream a selection of titles from Disney’s portfolio of movies, including instant access via the Lovefilm Player on PCs, in-home connected devices or the PlayStation3.

Deal includes library titles such as “Bedknobs and Broomsticks” and “Dead Poets Society” plus current pics “Tron: Legacy” and “Tangled.” Lovefilm already carries all Disney DVD and Blu-ray titles via its rental-by-post service.

Catherine Powell, senior VP and general manager of Media Distribution at Disney EMEA, said, “We’re working with innovative partners such as Lovefilm to offer our programming to viewers in evermore flexible, easy to access ways.”
