Discovery Studios has set new two-year programming development pacts with Shine Group, the U.K.’s All3Media and Aussie shingle WTFN. The division will also launch a virtual global unit and seeks to expand deeper into multiplatform territory with the new deals.
Agreements with Shine, All3Media and WTFN are nonexclusive but include pilot commitments.
The inhouse production arm of Discovery Studios has also been seeking out overall deals with high-profile unscripted producers including “Dirty Jobs” impresario Edward Barbini, Rob Hammersley of “Mythbusters” and, most recently, “America’s Next Top Model” producer Daniel Soiseth.
Discovery Studios has a history of aggressively pursuing ownership of the rights to all distribution platforms for its shows, with emphasis on digital.
Exec VP Lee Bartlett, who heads the division’s legal and business team for global production, emphasized the international nature of the deals and Discovery’s international footprint, which is 180 countries strong.
