BEIJING — China’s animation output rose 28% last year, according to the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT), with 220,530 minutes of toons produced.
China’s toon biz has long been eclipsed by foreign product, especially manga-style animations from Japan and “Spongebob Squarepants,” which is a massive favorite despite being screened at off-peak hours to help boost local product.
SARFT said local producers made 385 toons for TV last year.
China’s state-run cartoon workshops made 269 TV cartoons that amounted to 172,689 minutes, nearly 80% of the country’s annual production.
The SARFT statement said that local producers were reaping the benefits of government policies introduced in recent years to boost the industry’s development.
