S. African investigative journo feted at TV fest

TORONTO — South African investigative journalist Liz Fish will receive the inaugural David Suzuki Green Producer Award at the Banff World Media Festival’s Rockies industry awards lunch next week, the fest announced Tuesday morning.

Renamed in honor of the long-time CBC host (“The Nature of Things”) and activist, the award recognizes the professional and personal achievements of an individual who has raised awareness of scientific and environmental issues through visual media.

After making acclaimed social activist docus during Apartheid, Fish more recently shifted her focus to environmental justice, producing regular content for M-Net’s “Carte Blanche” program and her own docus.

“Liz Fish’s incisive environmental journalism has made an outstanding impact in South Africa and around the world,” Banff World Media Awards director Georges Leclere said in a statement. “Her work has educated the public on critical issues and been a major influence on a new generation of environmentally-conscious filmmakers.”

The Banff World Media Festival takes place June 12 to 15.
