‘Incendies’ wins public prize at Rotterdam

Pic edges out 'Biutiful' to win fest kudo

Brussels– “Incendies” by Canadian helmer Denis Villeneuve took the public prize at the Rotterdam Film Festival Saturday evening, edging out Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s “Biutiful.”

Both films are competing in the race for the 2011 foreign-language Oscar.

Norwegian reform school drama “King of Devil’s Island” by Marius Holst came in third, ahead of Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan.”

Award for the most popular film supported by the fest’s Hubert Bals Fund went to “If the Seed Doesn’t Die,” by Sinisa Dragin.

This bleak tragi-comedy brings together a Serbian man looking for the body of his son and a Romanian looking for his daughter, who has been sold into prostitution.

Highest scoring film in competition was “Gromozeka” by Vladimir Kott, about three old friends living loosely connected lives in Moscow.

Fest reports 340,000 visitors this year, down 13,000 on 2010. However, the number of tickets sold was up by 12,000.
