When a TV show is hot, other media will do just about anything to piggyback on its success. Hence the “True Blood” tie-in cover that Playboy is running this month, cleverly timed to the show’s third-season premiere.
Only the featured co-star, Natasha Alam, is at best a bit player in the series, playing a dancer at Fangtasia,
the vampire club within the show. She isn’t even listed in the credits that HBO sent out to mark the season kickoff — and those credits include a whopping 29 regular or recurring characters.
Granted, she looks great on the cover (and traffic’s traffic, so I’ll include that), but trumpeting her as a connection to the show is at best misleading — in a “This is the closest connection you could find to ‘True Blood?'” kind of way. It speaks, mostly, to a certain desperation in the publishing realm — a bit like running an “exclusive” about “The Sopranos” in its heyday and focusing on “Mobster No. 3.”
Nice photo, though — and yes, I’m a big enough hypocrite to use it.
