Single or Married, Bravo’s ‘Bethenny’ is Boring

In a supreme act of discipline, I sat through the June 10 premiere of “Bethenny Getting Married?,” Bravo’s spinoff from “The Real Housewives of New York City,” featuring pregnant/engaged participant Bethenny Frankel.

Bethenny_2010S But almost nothing happens in the premiere, except Bethenny hires a (gasp) straight male assistant — much to the chagrin of her significant other, the otherwise insignificant Jason Hoppy.

Proving that nothing is off-limits, Bethenny drags the camera along to her first meeting with a shrink (would anyone trust a shrink who would pretend to ignore three guys with boom mikes?), where she talks about her screwed-up family, as if that’s something new. Later, she throws a housewarming party, only Jason — who goes out of town on business — gets stranded by bad weather and can’t attend — even though a bunch of his friends are coming!

Despite her pre-party agitation, however, even Bethenny admits afterward that her fears were unfounded and that there was “no drama whatsoever.”

She’d make a pretty good critic, since that’s also an accurate description of the show.
