Talking to TCA critics on satellite from Europe, Joseph Fiennes might’ve had the best line of the tour so far when, during a panel for “Camelot” — the new series he’s doing for Starz — he was asked about the “FlashForward” experience.
The ABC series began last fall with grand expectations, only to suffer production problems, a long midseason hiatus, and, ultimately, a cancellation.
“I felt like I went through a series of blackouts for two minutes and 17 seconds and woke up in this Irish countryside,” he said, alluding to the show’s central plotline of having the entire planet inexplicably blacking out for that same amount of time.
Fiennes, who played an American FBI agent on “FlashForward,” had to subdue his Brit speak for the show but can bring it back for “Camelot,” which will launch in spring 2011.
Playing Merlin, Fiennes sees more to his character than making dragons disappear or putting together some sort of witchcraft-like potions.
“The magic lies in the political essence of the piece,” he explained from Ireland, where he was answering questions with writer Chris Chibnall. “He’s s mix of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Donald Rumsfeld. It’s about where the power lies, rather than slaying dragons. It’s about political agenda and the gaining of power. There are many parallels to be had with the modern world.”
