‘Talent’ tops Wednesday ratings

Despite season low, NBC series rules with 9.9 million viewers

Despite hitting a season low, Wednesday’s edition of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” ruled as the evening’s top-rated program. Other reality shows on CBS, Fox and NBC scored solid numbers as well, while ABC’s “Modern Family” picked up some in repeat.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, “America’s Got Talent” averaged a 2.6 rating/8 share in adults 18-49 and 9.9 million viewers overall, topping the night but down about 15% week to week. Also down but still competitive at 8 p.m. was gameshow “Minute to Win It” (1.8/6 in 18-49, 6.1 million viewers overall), and a repeat of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” held onto the demo lead among the broadcasters at 10 p.m. (1.5/5 in 18-49, 6.1 million viewers overall).

Fox narrowly won the night in adults 18-49 with “So You Think You Can Dance” (2.1/7 in 18-49, 5.7 million viewers overall), even though it didn’t win either of its hours and was down nearly 10% week to week. Fox continues to benefit this summer from not airing 10 p.m. shows, as low ratings in that hour have been driving down the nightly averages of ABC, CBS and NBC.

CBS won the night’s opening hour with “Big Brother” (2.2/8 in 18-49, 6.5 million viewers overall), which was down a tick week to week. It was followed by encores of “Criminal Minds” (1.5/5 in 18-49, 6.6 million viewers overall) and “CSI: NY” (1.3/4 in 18-49, 6.1 million viewers overall), both up a bit week to week.

At ABC, Emmy-nominated first-year comedy “Modern Family” showed its first real repeat spunk this summer, averaging an improved 1.7 rating/5 share in adults 18-49 and 4.5 million viewers overall. The net also fared better in the opening hour with repeats of “The Middle” (1.1/4 in 18-49, 4.1 million viewers overall at 8 p.m. and 1.2/4 in 18-49, 4.2 million viewers overall at 8:30 p.m.), but “Cougar Town” failed to grow at 9:30 p.m. (1.0/3 in 18-49, 2.9 million viewers overall). Closing out the night, a repeat of “Castle” settled for a 0.8/3 in 18-49 and 3.6 million viewers overall.

CW aired two repeats of “America’s Next Top Model,” averaging a 0.4/1 in 18-49 and 1.3 million viewers overall. Reality series “Plane Jane” bows on the night next week.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 2.1/7; NBC, 2.0/6; CBS, 1.7/5; Univision, 1.6/5; ABC, 1.1/4; CW, 0.4/1.

In total viewers: NBC, 7.2 million; CBS, 6.4 million; Fox, 5.7 million; Univision, 4.1 million; ABC, 3.8 million; CW, 1.3 million.
