‘Talent’ tops weak Wednesday

NBC wins night of less-than-scintillating ratings

On another night of less-than-scintillating ratings returns on the broadcast networks, “America’s Got Talent” towered over the competition to guide NBC to victory.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, a repeat of “America’s Got Talent” got NBC off to a decent second-place demo start in the night’s opening hour (1.7/6 in 18-49, 7.3 million viewers overall), and the show’s regular hourlong installment at 9 p.m. shot up to a 3.4/11 in 18-49 and 12.8 million viewers overall — standing as easily the night’s top program in both categories. Closing out the night, a repeat of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (1.8/6 in 18-49, 6.0 million viewers overall) comfortably led its hour in all demos and also prevailed in total viewers.

At Fox, a two-hour episode of “So You Think You Can Dance” (2.2/7 in 18-49, 5.8 million viewers overall) was down about 10% week to week but still won its opening hour and then placed second among young adults to NBC’s “Talent” from 9 to 10.

CBS aired special encores of its Monday comedies “How I Met Your Mother” (1.1/4 in 18-49, 3.6 million viewers overall) and “Rules of Engagement” (1.2/4 in 18-49, 3.6 million viewers overall) followed by regular repeats of dramas “Criminal Minds” (1.3/4 in 18-49, 6.0 million viewers overall) and “CSI: NY” (1.1/4 in 18-49, 5.9 million viewers overall).

ABC was on the low side throughout the night with its all-repeat lineup, opening with an hour of “The Middle” (averaging 1.0/4 in 18-49 and 4.0 million viewers overall) followed by “Modern Family” (1.3/4 in 18-49, 3.9 million viewers overall), “Cougar Town” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 3.0 million viewers overall) and a special off-night episode of Monday mystery series “Castle” (0.7/3 in 18-49, 3.4 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: NBC, 2.3/8; Fox, 2.2/7; Univision, 1.7/6; CBS, 1.2/4; ABC, 0.9/3; CW, 0.4/1.

In total viewers: NBC, 8.7 million; Fox, 5.8 million; CBS, 5.2 million; Univision, 4.2 million; ABC, 3.6 million; CW, 1.0 million.
