Ratings: ‘Idol,’ ‘Target’ pace Fox victory

CBS' 'Criminal Minds' was night's top scripted program

Though it was on the low side, Fox’s “American Idol” again crushed everything on Wednesday, teaming with winning rookie drama “Human Target” to lift the net to victory. CBS’ “Criminal Minds” was the top scripted program on an evening when ABC’s comedies aired repeats.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, Fox kicked off the night a winner with “Human Target” (2.2 rating/7 share in adults 18-49, 7.7 million viewers overall), beating out NBC’s special gameshow “Minute to Win It” (1.8/6 in 18-49, 5.9 million viewers overall) and the CBS comedy combo of “New Adventures of Old Christine” (1.6/6 in 18-49, 6.1 million viewers overall) and “Accidentally on Purpose” (1.9/6 in 18-49, 6.3 million viewers overall); the Eye laffers were low, but “Accidentally,” in its first original episode in its new time period, did built on its lead-in.

At 9, Fox’s “American Idol” took over (6.5/18 in 18-49, 19.7 million viewers overall), down slightly week to week but still matching the combined delivery of the other three major broadcast networks. CBS veteran drama “Criminal Minds” ran second (3.5/9 in 18-49, 12.5 million viewers overall) with an episode that introduced a new character played by Forest Whitaker, who is toplining a planned spinoff of the show for next season.

CBS had to share the demo lead at 10, though, as “CSI: NY” (2.5/7 in 18-49, 10.6 million viewers overall) tied in 18-49 with NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (2.5/7 in 18-49, 8.3 million viewers overall).

ABC didn’t do much on the night with repeats of comedies “Modern Family” at 8 (1.6/5 in 18-49, 5.1 million viewers overall), “The Middle” at 8:30 (1.6/5 in 18-49, 5.1 million viewers overall), another “Modern Family” in its regular slot at 9 (1.9/5 in 18-49, 5.0 million viewers overall) and “Cougar Town” at 9:30 (1.4/4 in 18-49, 3.7 million viewers overall). One week from its series finale, “Ugly Betty” closed the night edging up a tick (1.4/4 in 18-49, 4.0 million viewers overall) but remained well behind its major-network competitors.

At CW, “America’s Next Top Model” (1.4/5 in 18-49, 3.3 million viewers overall) continued to be competitive among younger viewers, edging NBC and Fox for the 8 o’clock hour’s lead in adults 18-34 (1.5/6).
