According to Fox and Billboard, the “Glee” cast has landed a record 75 singles on the Hot 100 chart. (The Beatles had 71).
Let’s put some caveats in here, however: The Hot 100 is a very different chart than it was even 10 years ago. Until the dawn of the download age, songs could only appear on the Hot 100 if they were a commercially released single. That requires production, packaging and marketing — which is why your average album release would only yield a handful of singles.
But “Glee” benefits from the sheer number of song downloads available at any given moment from the show. And that avalanche of music benefits from the fact that “Glee” songs are all covers of popular tunes.
But nonetheless, it’s clear that “Glee” is a phenomenon. The show has sold 11.5 million downloads and 2.8 million albums since its launch.
And most importantly, it’s not Justin Bieber beating out the Beatles. Whew.
