No new home for ‘Christine’

Warner Bros. TV ends quest to find home for show

Warner Bros. TV has ended its quest to find a new home for “Old Christine.”

Decision to throw in the towel came after ABC officially passed on picking up the Julia Louis-Dreyfus laffer, which was canceled last month by CBS.

Warner Bros. TV has spent the last two weeks attempting to place the Julia Louis-Dreyfus sitcom elsewhere. ABC was at the top of their list, as the Alphabet net had deals in place the last two years to pick “Christine”

up if CBS canceled the show.

This year, however, ABC didn’t make a similar pact. The Alphabet net now has a stable of live-action sitcoms (including breakout hit “Modern Family”), something it didn’t have in the years that it made the “Christine” arrangement.

While “Christine” has a fan base and decent reviews from critics, the show performed poorly for CBS on Wednesday nights. Given that ABC already knows that the show doesn’t make much noise on the night — which is also where most of the Alphabet’s laffers air — net execs ultimately decided to pass.

ABC similarly opted not to pick up another canceled CBS show, “Ghost Whisperer.” That was seen as the more likely Eye skein to wind up at ABC, particularly because ABC Studios co-produces “Ghost.”

Warner Bros. TV still believed in the show enough that it’s even currently running an Emmy campaign for “Old Christine.” But the studio’s execs believe they have now exhausted their options, and have ended those efforts.

“Old Christine” aired over the course of five seasons — but some of those seasons were limited orders. That means the show has aired a total of 88 episodes — pretty close to the magic number for broadcast syndication.

Show has already been sold in off-net to Lifetime, which begins airing “Old Christine” in fall 2010. Warner Bros. has also cleared “Old Christine” reruns on TV stations for fall 2010 as well, including Tribune’s WPIX New York and KTLA Los Angeles, as well as indie WCIU in Chicago.
