Bilingual youth channel to air soccer, recaps
NBC Universal’s youth-targeted bilingual cable channel mun2 is hoping to repeat sister web Telemundo’s success with sports programming with the launch of a “mun2 Sports” block.
Beginning Feb. 20, mun2 will air a selection of Mexican League soccer matches on Saturdays. On Sunday nights, it will air “Sports Arena,” a fast-paced recap of sports events including the National Football League, Major League Baseball, martial arts and wrestling.
“These (soccer) games are from our existing rights to the teams offered on Telemundo but (the mun2 Sports block) allows us an additional platform to broadcast distinct matches simultaneously when the need arises,” said Telemundo exec VP of sports Jorge Hidalgo. “There will be a brand-new announce team to call the games and host the new program and briefs on mun2.”
What started out as mainly a music-oriented channel has evolved over nearly 10 years into a lifestyle channel that features diverse programming including fashion, movies, reality and telenovelas. Mun2 is available in 33.3 million cable homes.
On Friday, mun2 launches “Have you cine,” a feature film showcase to include such pics as “The Motorcycle Diaries” and “Raising Victor Vargas.”
As the network has matured, so have our opportunities and resources,” said mun2 programming VP Flavio Morales.
