MLB Network lands Mark McGwire interview

Outside of the Simon Cowell world, in sports, the big news today was baseball single-season home-run record holder Mark McGwire’s admission to The Associated Press that he used performance enhancing drugs. Barely past its first anniversary on the air, the MLB Network landed the first on-camera interview with McGwire, airing at 4 p.m. today.

Conducting the interview will be Bob Costas, an example of the heavyweight power that MLB Network has quickly come to employ. In a similar circumstance last year, Peter Gammons of ESPN had the definitive interview with Alex Rodriguez when that slugger admitted his PED use, but Gammons has also recently joined the MLB Network.

Gammons, along with fellow ex-ESPNer Harold Reynolds, will be part of MLB Network’s post-interview reaction team.
