‘Melissa and Joey’ gets season pickup

ABC Family orders four pilots as well

ABC Family has ordered four more pilots and given a full-season pickup to “Melissa and Joey.”

Pilots include a new drama from Brenda Hampton, creator of ABC Family hit “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.”

“This is the most aggressive development slate in the network’s history,” said newly appointed ABC Family prexy Michael Riley. “It shows the network’s commitment to offering viewers a great mix of brand-defining original series.”

The untitled Hampton project revolves around an ethnically diverse group of girls at a California private school.

The Great State of Georgia” is about a plus-size performer from the South and her best friend trying to make it in Gotham. Half-hour is written and exec produced by Jennifer Weiner and Jeff Greenstein.

The other two are hourlongs: “What Would Jane Do” and “The Lying Game.”

“Jane,” from scribe April Blair, follows a 16-year-old girl who is mistaken for an adult when she gets a job at a trendy retail store. Gavin Polone exec produces.

“The Lying Game,” from scribe Charles Pratt Jr., is a potboiler about a girl raised in foster care who discovers she has a twin sister who suddenly goes missing.

Project hails from Warner Horizon TV and Alloy Entertainment, home of ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars.” It’s based on an upcoming novel by “Pretty Little Liars” author Sara Shepard. Alloy’s Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo exec produce with Pratt.

The “Melissa and Joey” pickup of 20 episodes — bringing the first season total to 30 — amounts to a big vote of confidence in the laffer that stars Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence. It’s performed well for the cabler since its Aug. 17 bow in the Tuesday 8 p.m. slot.
