If what happened tonight on CNN’s “Larry King Live” is any indication, get ready for a monster Haiti fundraiser Friday.
Earlier today, I wrote about the song and screen industries’ efforts to raise money to help victims of the Haiti earthquake. That article was published King’s two-hour special devoted to Haiti fundraising relief went on the air.
Despite having little advance publicity and airing on just a single cable network, the special raised $5 million in 120 minutes. Not a bad warmup for Friday’s event, airing on 10 television networks domestically, including all five major broadcast networks.
Ben Stiller, Jennifer Lopez, Paula Abdul, Ringo Starr, Seal, Ryan Seacrest, Sean Combs, Alyssa Milano, Jared Leto, Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon, Kobe Bryant, Danny Glover, Susan Sarandon and Nicole Richie were among those who participated in King’s special. Among other efforts, Milano pledged $50,000 in an effort to draw matching funds.
Update: With CNN’s phone banks staying during “Anderson Cooper 360,” CNN’s fundraising total grew to $7.3 million in four hours.
