What is a two-year extension, Alex.
“Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” have been reupped through the 2013-14 season on the ABC-owned TV stations, where they’ve dominated the prime access slots for decades.
Both gameshows, produced by Sony Pictures Television and sold by CBS Television Distribution, were set to have their deals end in 2012.
“Wheel” and “Jeopardy!” have long been mainstays and are huge profit centers for both CBS (which acquired them when the Eye bought King World) and Sony. “Wheel” is tops in gameshow syndication, while “Jeopardy!” is No. 2.
Renewals mark a constant in a quickly changing syndie landscape. “Oprah” is going off the air next year and other talkshows — specifically “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and a new chatfest headed by Rosie O’Donnell — are looking to fill the void.
Terms of the renewal were not clear but local ABC stations, severely hurt by the ad recession and slow economy, were looking for better deals than the one signed in the 2007.
“Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek and “Wheel” emcee Pat Sajak have also reportedly extended their respective contracts.
