Internet spoilers ruining Olympics

Online updates draws ire of TV audiences

Spoiler alert: Olympics results can no longer be successfully time-delayed, as West Coast viewers of this month’s Winter Games have discovered.

While NBC carries the Games live in primetime on the East Coast, the Peacock has opted to keep its key primetime coverage in pattern on the West Coast as well. That means viewers in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle, among other spots, are watching theGames’ biggest competitions three hours after the fact.

In the age of Twitter, Google news alerts and constantly updated blogs, that’s three hours too long for many Olympics fans. Even those who attempt a complete Internet blackout, are still stumbling over information about gold medalists — surprises they’d rather watch on TV.

Last week, for example, NBC News’ Chuck Todd earned the wrath of his West Coast followers when he tweeted Lindsey Vonn’s gold medal win.

NBC says primetime allows for the largest aud to catch the Games’ biggest events. (It also makes a big difference for advertisers.) The net also has worked to keep much content off the Web (with less online streaming this time, as several news orgs have pointed out).

But beyond that, West Coast viewers will have to just keep away from Internet cafes and Olympic updates.
