NBC on the rise with 'Loser,' 'Parenthood'

Fox remained on top of the charts Tuesday as “American Idol” and “Glee” both dominated their hours in key demos. NBC was on the rise, meanwhile, with “The Biggest Loser” above average and “Parenthood” hitting a seven-week high.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, “American Idol” opened the night down but still dominant (projected 6.9 rating/20 share in adults 18-49, 19.5 million viewers overall from 8 to 9:03 p.m.), more than doubling NBC’s second-place “Biggest Loser.” It was followed by “Glee,” whose Madonna-themed episode scored well (projected 5.2/13 in 18-49, 13.0 million viewers overall) and retained more than 90% of its rating for the previous week’s return episode.

NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” (3.3/9 in 18-49, 8.4 million viewers overall) matched its best delivery in two months, placing second in both hours and leading into a winning performance from “Parenthood” at 10 p.m. (2.9/8 in 18-49, 7.2 million viewers overall). “Parenthood,” which was just renewed for a second season, rose 16% week to week and has beaten its regular competition in four of its last five outings.

ABC was down week to week with both the “Dancing With the Stars” results show (2.4/7 in 18-49, 13.4 million viewers overall) and “Lost” (3.7/9 in 18-49, 9.4 million viewers overall), with the latter falling to third in 18-49 during the 9 o’clock hour. And at 10, “V” (2.3/7 in 18-49, 6.0 million viewers overall) was roughly flat vs. the previous week.

CBS had a quiet night, airing repeats of “NCIS” (1.7/5 in 18-49, 9.8 million viewers overall), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (2.0/5 in 18-49, 10.2 million viewers overall) and “The Good Wife” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 7.7 million viewers overall).
