“What the fuck do you think this is? The Tonys?” screamed host Neil Patrick Harris. Then he promptly gunned down a troop of dancers decked out in white tuxes and tails, thus kicking off Spike TV’s Video Game Awards.
Saturday’s event at L.A. Live made use of gamer technology to add a vidgame look and feel to the live kudocast. “It was less about mimicking the Hollywood style awards show and more about bringing the games to life,” said exec producer Casey Patterson.
Harris made note of the tech aspect of the show, which took on two different looks depending if you were viewing the kudocast from home or from the theater. “It’s not fun for you in the audience unless you use the Yoda bong that came in the gift bag,” Harris noted.
