In a matter of hours today, the tentpoles for a telethon to raise relief funds for victims of the earthquake in Haiti were erected: an airdate (Jan. 22), an A-list organizing celebrity (George Clooney) and a lead network (MTV).
A formal announcement about the telethon is due Friday from MTV, which as it happens has the early session at the Television Critics Assn. gathering in Pasadena. That should fill in a lot of the details – details that even participating networks were still gathering as of this afternoon.
Though CBS and HBO confirmed they are on board for the telethon, tentatively scheduled for 8-10 p.m. Eastern, others were still in a holding pattern.
Producing the telethon will be Joel Gallen, who helmed the 9/11 telethon “America: A Tribute to Heroes” that aired 10 days after that tragedy.
