About a week ago, I wrote a story for Variety about how the success of “Glee” had failed to inspire any copycat attempts. But the thinly veiled Masked Scheduler still fears they’re coming.
… Now that GLEE looks real, at least for the moment, I’m wondering how many pitches will be coming the way of network execs which start something like…..”Think GLEE meets……..” because that’s the way this business works. There’s a saying: Imitation is the greatest form of Television” and I think we’re about to go through the GLEE cycle. The easiest way to imitate is the CBS/LAW AND ORDER model….what I like to call a colonized hit. It gets a bit more tricky when you pitch the next GLEE or as we saw a few years ago LOST…..
… So I’m going to do a lot of thinking about GLEE. I don’t have to like it but I want to understand it because I think we’re going to start getting several dumb ass pitches in the near future (as will others) and we also need to develop some compatible shows to pair with it or it will be LOST all over again.
I share Scheduler’s amibvalence about “Glee,” but I think there’s a solution if they get several “dumb ass pitches.” Just say no.
