FX has interest in Conan

With Conan O’Brien about to become a free agent, FX would be interested in having him host a latenight comedic program, possibly in the vein of a Comedy Central staple.

President and g.m. John Landgraf said he doesn’t see a traditional talkshow as the only option for O’Brien and offered “The Daily Show” as a template of how FX, if it went forward, might program past 11 p.m. when its current original programming lineup ends.

“We’d love to have a daily show with someone as good as Conan or Stephen Colbert. These guys are rare comedy talent, but it’s really up to FBC (Fox Broadcasting Corp.) and Peter Rice,” Landgraf said. “He gets to decide whether Conan gets to go to the big brother or little brother.”

Fox entertainment chairman Rice, who attended Sunday’s FX Television Critics Assn. presentation, said, “The developments are still unraveling themselves but we’ve pretty vocal about wanting to be in business with Conan. It’s a bit premature to say where he will be, but first and foremost, it’s about where Conan wants to be.”

Cabler is coming off a strong premiere for “Archer,” which is the latest laffer to have performed well for the net. First-year football fantasy comedy “The League” just got picked up for a second season and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” continued to grow auds in its fifth season. Next to arrive will be standup comic Louie CK skein “Louie,” set to debut in April.

FX has a full slate on the drama side as well. With seven on the air or about to preem (“Justified,” “Terriers,” “Lights Out”), Landgraf said the net will most likely order only one drama pilot over in 2010. And based on FX’s track record — eight of the nine drama pilots made under Landgraf’s regime have been picked up for series — that show could reach a series order as well.

Denis Leary starrer “Rescue Me” will have its sixth-season premiere in June with 10 episodes, to be followed by nine episodes in 2011.

Landgraf said there are two more seasons (26 episodes) ordered for “Sunny,” and a decision about the future of the show beyond that would probably be made in September.
