Facing tough competish, MTV Movie Awards take a ratings hit

Facing tough competition – including Game 2 of the NBA Finals – this year’s MTV Movie Awards took a bit of a ratings hit.

The kudofest, hosted this year by hot comic (and “Parks and Recreation” star) Aziz Ansari, averaged 5.8 million viewers across MTV, MTV2 and VH1. That’s a 2% dip from last year, when the awards show averaged 5.9 million across MTV and MTV2 (it wasn’t simulcast on VH1).

VH1 stepped in to help minimize the Movie Awards’ drop. On MTV by itself, the kudocast took a much bigger drop, from 5.3 million last year to 4.6 million this year. MTV put a brighter face on it by reporting the full cume number – 16.4 million.

Show was filled with expletives and MTV had to issue an apology Monday for not bleeping all the curses. According to one estimate, more than 100 cuss words were spoken during the two-hour telecast.

Below, Aziz gives an R. Kelly-style recap of “Avatar” — and tells BP a little bit of what we’re all thinking at the moment.
