Name of new kids network announced at TCA press tour

Discovery and Hasbro have unveiled the name for their new kids network: the Hub.

Margaret Loesch, president and CEO of the joint-venture network, unveiled the name on Thursday morning at Discovery’s portion of the TV Critics Assn. press tour.

“A hub is a place where great things come together,” Loesch said in explaining the name. Plus, she quipped, naming the channel “the Discovery Communications-Hasbro Joint Venture” didn’t quite resonate.

Loesch confirmed once again that the Hub was set to launch this fall — taking over what’s currently Discovery Kids, available in 60 million homes.

Discovery also reiterated that early programs set to launch on the new net include “Transformers” and “My Little Pony,” based on the Hasbro franchises.

Discovery Kids skeins “Adventure Camp” and “Flight 29 Down” will also make the leap to the Hub.

Loesch said more programming info will be announced by summer.

The Hub is probably also best known as a nickname for Boston. USA Broadcasting once pro-grammed a Boston station — WHUB at the time, now Telefutura outlet WUTF — nicknamed the Hub.
