“It was kind of a daunting undertaking. I had about a month to prepare, which was what I needed. I read her books and worked with my friend who is a choreographer and recruited her help to see how autism manifests itself in the body, as well having a dialect coach. I didn’t look at any footage or stills when we were shooting, because I couldn’t afford to be remotely self-conscious. If we had made any errors in judgment, it would be embarrassing. I was profoundly relieved. The most important thing was that Temple recognized herself and it was a fair representation.”
