CBS’ “Undercover Boss” gets a new boss

CBS alternative programming VP Chris Carlson is returing to the production world, moving to Studio Lambert as the new executive producer of “Undercover Boss.”

“While producing our first season, we worked closely with Chris and could see clearly that he was an outstanding producing talent who had…a great passion to make it even more successful in its second season,” said Studio Lambert CEO Stephen Lambert.

Carlson had been a CBS alternative exec since March 2008. But he mostly hails from the producing world, having won an Emmy for Bravo’s “Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List.”

Carlson’s credits also include Bravo’s “Blow Out,” Lifetime’s “Off the Leash” and The CW’s “Farmer Wants a Wife.”

CBS alternative topper Jennifer Bresnan said Carlson has been deeply involved with “Undercover Boss” since its inception.

“His creative input helped shape the direction and success of the show,” Bresnan said. “We have the utmost confidence in his ability as an executive producer.”

There’s no shortage of reality players who have transitioned back and forth between producing and serving as an exec. At ABC, for example, alternative chief Michael Davies eventually left that post to serve full time as an exec producer on his “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.”

Carlson’s other credits at CBS have included working on key Eye franchises “Survivor” and “Big Brother.”

As a supervising producer at Next Entertainment, Carlson worked on projects such as “Big Man on Campus.” He also spent time developing series at MTV, including “Making the Video,” “Punk’d,” “The Osbournes” and “Kidnapped.”

Carlson fills the void left by Shauna Minoprio, who has departed the show for personal reasons.

“Undercover Boss” remains the top-rated new series of the year, thanks in part to its hefty post-Super Bowl launch.
