“The Wire” star Idris Elba is the lead in a new series to air later this year on BBC America, “Luther.”
BBC America and the BBC are co-producing a six-episode first season of the hourlong crime series starring the London-born Elba, who played Stringer Bell on “The Wire.” Elba plays a brilliant but self-destructive homicide detective. Series premiered in the U.K. in the spring.
Ruth Wilson (“Jane Eyre,” “The Prisoner”) co-stars as his Alice, his white whale who has committed multiple murders but also is something of a confidante for him. Other cast members include Steven Mackintosh, Indira Varma, Paul McGann, Saskia Reeves and Warren Brown.
“It’s an intense psychological thriller which examines not only human depravity but the complex nature of love … and how it’s often this – our finest attribute – that leads us into darkness,” said suspense novelist Neil Cross (“MI-5”), who created the series.
BBC Worldwide is distributing the series. Elba is also an associate producer.
