Cop drama sees 20% increase in ratings

ABC’s decision to pick up Canadian series “Rookie Blue” for a second summer is looking like a good one after the cop drama rose nicely and led its broadcast competition in some categories. Overall, ABC, CBS and Fox were in a tight battle for the demo lead.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, “Rookie Blue” averaged a 1.8 rating/6 share in adults 18-49 and 6.8 million viewers overall during the 9 o’clock hour, rising 20% week to week even though it had a softer lead-in as lead-in “Wipeout” aired a repeat (2.0/7 in 18-49, 6.4 million viewers overall); both “Wipeout” and “Blue” finished just out of the 18-49 lead during their hours, though “Blue” led in adults 25-54 (2.4/7) and total viewers. Closing out the night for ABC, news program “Boston Med” (1.2/4 in 18-49, 4.7 million viewers overall) was on par with its recent average.

CBS led Thursday’s opening hour with “Big Brother” (2.2/8 in 18-49, 6.4 million viewers overall), which matched its score of the previous week and was up a tick vs. the comparable night a year ago. It was followed by so-so repeat performances from crime dramas “CSI” (1.2/4 in 18-49, 6.0 million viewers overall) and “The Mentalist” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 7.4 million viewers overall).

Fox opened with a repeat “Glee” (1.3/5 in 18-49, 3.8 million viewers overall), followed by “So You Think You Can Dance” (1.9/6 in 18-49, 5.8 million viewers overall), which was down slightly week to week but still edged past ABC’s “Rookie Blue” for the 18-49 lead at 9 o’clock.

NBC didn’t do much with any of its programs, offering an all-repeat lineup of “Community” (1.0/4 in 18-49, 2.8 million viewers overall), “30 Rock” (1.0/3 in 18-49, 2.6 million viewers overall), “The Office” (1.3/4 in 18-49, 3.1 million viewers overall), “Parks & Recreation” (1.1/3 in 18-49, 2.6 million viewers overall) and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 3.0 million viewers overall).

CW aired repeats of “The Vampire Diaries” (0.5/2 in 18-49, 1.5 million viewers overall) and “Moonlight” (0.4/1 in 18-49, 1.2 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 1.7/6; CBS, 1.6/5; Fox, 1.6/5; Univision, 1.5/5; NBC, 1.0/3; CW, 0.5/2.

In total viewers: CBS, 6.6 million; ABC, 6.0 million; Fox, 4.8 million; Univision, 3.6 million; NBC, 2.9 million.
