Al Madrigal set to star in the sitcom

Break out the Alka Seltzer: L.A.’s food truck phenomenon, which has already spawned a reality TV competition series, is now the focus of a sitcom in development at ABC.

Comedian Al Madrigal has signed on to star in the laffer, tentatively titled “Family Owned.” Multiethnic, multigenerational family comedy centers on a son (Madrigal) who takes over the family food truck business.

“King of the Hill” alums TonyGama-Lobo and Rebecca May created the show and will exec produce. Warren Littlefield is also attached as an executive producer. ABC Studios, where Littlefield is now based, is the studio.

Madrigal most recently appeared on Comedy Central’s “Nick Swardson’s Pretend Time.” He was also a regular on “Gary Unmarried” and “Welcome to the Captain,” both at CBS. And he starred in Fox’s “The Ortegas,” which was produced but never aired.

The Madrigal show couldn’t come at a better time, as the gourmet food truck business has surged in popularity in Los Angeles. It all started with the Kogi truck, which exploded in popularity thanks to its Korean/Mexican fusion specialties, like kimchi quesadillas.

L.A., New York and other urban hubs are now flooded with such trucks; one amateur expert said she lost track at more than 140 trucks. That’s led to the mainstreaming of lesser-known bites like Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches, Filipino adobo sliders, Armenian cheese bureks and Hawaiian spam musubi.

Gama-Lobo and May spent seven seasons on “King of the Hill.” The married couple’s credits also include the short-lived ABC laffer “Freddie.”
