‘Idol’ dominates Tuesday ratings

Fox show crushes NBC's 'Loser,' CBS repeats

“American Idol” crushed the competition as it kicked off its second week Tuesday, lifting Fox to an easy victory on a night when NBC’s “Biggest Loser” performed well and CBS aired all repeats.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, “American Idol” (9.9 rating/27 share in adults 18-49, 26.1 million viewers overall) was down as expected from its big premiere of a week ago and about on par with its delivery of last Wednesday. It beat its combined ABC-CBS-NBC-CW competition in the 8 o’clock hour by about 40% in adults 18-49. It was followed by a special encore of the “Human Target” drama preview (3.4/9 in 18-49, 9.2 million viewers overall).

NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” (4.1/11 in 18-49, 9.9 million viewers overall) shot up by more than 25% from last week and easily led the 9 o’clock hour in demos after “Idol” exited the airwaves. And at 10, “The Jay Leno Show” took advantage of repeat competition on ABC and CBS to post its second best Tuesday in the last seven weeks (2.0/6 in 18-49, 9.6 million viewers overall).

CBS hung in there with repeats of “NCIS” (2.6/7 in 18-49, 14.1 million viewers overall), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (2.5/7 in 18-49, 12.3 million viewers overall) and “The Good Wife” (2.0/6 in 18-49, 9.6 million viewers overall), with the latter two rookies winning their hours in total viewers.

ABC was not a factor with its low-rated evening that included firstrun comedies “Scrubs” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 3.3 million viewers overall) and “Better Off Ted” (1.3/3 in 18-49, 3.2 million viewers overall) and a repeat of “The Forgotten” at 10 p.m. (1.0/3 in 18-49, 3.7 million viewers overall).

And CW fared even worse, of course, with encores of “90210” (0.3/1 in 18-49, 0.8 million viewers overall) and “Melrose Place” (0.2/1 in 18-49, 0.7 million viewers overall).

In latenight, NBC’s “Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien” (1.9/8 in 18-49) dominated CBS’ “Late Show With David Letterman” (0.7/3) in Nielsen’s 25 local markets with People Meters. Letterman held a slight edge in metered-market households (3.2/8 to 3.1/8).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 6.7/18; NBC, 3.4/9; CBS, 2.4/6; Univision, 1.4/4; ABC, 1.0/3; CW, 0.3/1.

In total viewers: Fox, 17.6 million; CBS, 12.0 million; NBC, 8.7 million; Univision, 3.6 million; ABC, 3.1 million; CW, 0.7 million.
