Simmons, Lathan, Comedy Central set series
Comedy Central has greenlit a standup series that Russell Simmons and Stan Lathan (“Def Comedy Jam”) will exec produce.
JB Smoove (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) will host the urban-accented showcase, which will be taped in Los Angeles on Wednesday and Thursday to air in the summer. Cabler has ordered six episodes of the half-hour skein.
“We’ve been trying to get into business with Russell and Stan for a while now, and this new standup series is an exciting first venture for us to partner with them,” said Elizabeth Porter, Comedy Central’s senior veep of specials and talent. Show is currently untitled.
Each of the episodes will feature three comics on the rise. DJ Cassidy is providing music.
Simmons and Lathan’s “Def Comedy Jam” franchise for HBO helped spur the careers of comics including Chris Tucker, Dave Chappelle, Martin Lawrence, Bernie Mac, Steve Harvey and Mo’Nique.
Comedy Central also announced that the premiere date for animated horror-comedy “Ugly Americans” will be March 17.
