Studio expands U.K.-based production empire

NBC Universal Intl. has completed its acquisition of U.K. shingle Monkey Kingdom for an undisclosed sum, as it continues to bulk up its U.K.-based production activities.

Monkey was founded in 2001 and specializes in nonscripted and scripted fare.

Recent shows include “The Charlotte Church Show,” “Comedy Roasts,” “My Kind of Town,” “Make My Day,” “The Passions of Girls Aloud” and “Newlyweds.”

It’s also active in digital and created “The Secret World of Sam King,” a 60-episode drama for social networking site Bebo.

Monkey will continue to be run by David Granger and Will Macdonald, reporting to Gareth Neame, NBC U Intl.’s managing director of U.K., who oversees comedy, drama and entertainment.

Monkey will work with Neame and Sophie Lloyd of Peacock Prods., an NBC U nonfiction production unit that uses the resources and production talent of NBC News.

Michael Edelstein, NBC U president of international TV production, said: “We are in the process of transforming NBC Universal Intl. into a leading destination for content creators. Monkey has proven themselves as innovators in the nonscripted space, and we are excited to help build their business in the U.K., U.S. and around the world.”

Monkey is NBC Universal’s third U.K. production venture following the acquisition of Carnival and the launch of WTTV, NBC U’s joint venture with Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.

NBC U Intl. is eyeing other British shingles as it aims to achieve $5 billion in non-U.S. revenues.
