Current, former employees welcome
Come one, come all who have logged time working for the Peacock.
That’s the message from organizers of the 15th annual NBC Reunion Dinner as they prep for the Oct. 23 event at Lakeside Golf Club in (beautiful downtown) Burbank.
This year’s gathering will encompass a tribute to Johnny Carson, as it falls on what would have been the latenight legend’s 85th birthday. Several comedians who performed on Carson’s “Tonight Show” are set to appear, including Tom Dreesen and Steve Landesberg, and organizers are looking to collect video tributes and letters from other alums. (David Letterman and Jay Leno, this means you.)
The reunion dinner was inspired by NBC’s long-gone tradition of hosting a service awards ceremony at the Beverly Hills Hotel for employees with five or more years at the network. It was a highlight of the year for many staffers (open bar, good eats), but it faded away after General Electric acquired the Peacock in 1986.
A group of NBC retirees decided to revive the gathering on their own in 1996. Attendance has grown steadily, according to co-organizer Gene Walsh, a former Peacock PR chief.
Walsh hopes that they’ll attract some contempo NBC employees this year. With the Peacock in a state of major transition, the newbies could learn a thing or two from talking to the old guard.
