Shuster punished for pursuing CNN project
MSNBC anchor David Shuster has been suspended indefinitely for pursuing a new program at rival all-news cabler CNN.Shuster reportedly filmed a test for a project in development at CNN without informing the higher-ups at MSNBC. Shuster is under contract at MSNBC until December. MSNBC prexy Phil Griffin reportedly learned of Shuster’s job-hunting through a New York Observer story. MSNBC would not comment beyond a statement confirming Shuster’s indefinite suspension. This isn’t the first time Shuster has been suspended by MSNBC. During the 2008 election, the anchor was suspended for two weeks after remarking on-air that Chelsea Clinton was “being pimped out” on the campaign trail. Shuster has worked for all three cable news nets, starting as a D.C.-based field producer for CNN and then spending six years with Fox News Channel before joining MSNBC. Whatever Shuster’s motivations, if he was trying to exit MSNBC, he may have succeeded. Ed Schultz has hosted Shuster’s 3 p.m. hour on the cabler since Monday. Contessa Brewer will take over Shuster’s 10pm slot.
