HBO takes a shot at ‘Smash’

Sundance documentary will air on pay cabler

Leon Gast’s paparazzo documentary “Smash His Camera,” which competed at Sundance, has clicked with HBO Documentary Films.

The six-figure pact for U.S. broadcast rights will allow for “Smash” to have a theatrical and DVD release after a four to six week HBO premiere window. Film had two theatrical offers at Sundance, but no deal is in place for those rights so far.

HBO picked up another Sundance winner recently: Marina Zenovich’s 2008 docu “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired.” In that case, HBO snapped up all U.S. rights for about twice the price of what it paid for “Smash” and farmed out theatrical to Think Film.

“Smash” follows celebrity shutterbug Ron Galella, who used to lie in wait outside of Studio 54 in the ’70s and whose iconic subjects have included Jacqueline Onassis and Marlon Brando.

Producers are Adam Schlesinger of Got The Shot Prods. and Linda Saffire.

Gast, who won an Oscar for 1996 docu “When We Were Kings,” took home Sundance’s U.S. documentary directing prize for “Smash” last month.

Submarine’s Josh Braun brokered the deal with HBO’s Sheila Nevins and Sara Bernstein.
