HBO puts four on the floor

Lifetime's 'Georgia O'Keeffe' only exception

Directors looking for a fast track to an Emmy nomination were reminded this year that partnering with HBO is always a good idea.

The premium cable channel won four of the five nominations in the miniseries/movie/dramatic special directing category, with two nods going to episodes of the sprawling World War II miniseries “The Pacific.” HBO movies “Temple Grandin” and “You Don’t Know Jack” also won nominations, with Lifetime’s “Georgia O’Keeffe” biopic filling out the category.

The recognition for the highly regarded “Pacific” was not surprising — unless you thought the 10-part miniseries would pick up even more nominations in the category. Voters went for episode eight, co-directed by David Nutter and Jeremy Podeswa, and the Tim Van Patten-helmed episode nine, which focused on the dramatic battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, respectively.

Veteran director Barry Levinson returned to the Emmy ranks with “Jack,” a look at the life of doctor-assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian. Levinson has won four Emmys in his career, most recently for directing a 1993 episode of “Homicide: Life on the Street.”

Two other directors were rewarded for their biopics — Mick Jackson for his imaginatively visual work in portraying the life of autism advocate Grandin and Bob Balaban for his look at renowned artist O’Keeffe.
